How to correctly bleed your radiator

Keep your heating running efficiently with this simple step-by-step guide from Perceptive Heating

  1. Turn off your heating.
Make sure radiators are cool before starting.

  2. Find your bleed key.
This small square-ended key fits the bleed valve on the top of your radiator.

  3. Place a cloth or bowl under the valve.
This catches any drips of water that escape.

  4. Turn the bleed valve slowly.
Use the key to turn the valve anti-clockwise — you’ll hear a hissing sound as air escapes.

  5. Wait for water to appear.
Once water (not air) starts coming out, quickly tighten the valve clockwise.

  6. Check your boiler pressure (ONLY if you have a combination boiler/ combi boiler or a sealed system).
Bleeding radiators can lower pressure — if it’s below 1 bar, top it up.

  7. Turn your heating back on.
Check that all radiators are warming evenly.

💡 Top Tips from Perceptive Heating:

  • Bleed your radiators once a year, ideally before winter.

  • If some radiators stay cold, you may need system balancing or a power flush — we can help!

  • Always recheck pressure after bleeding if you have a combi boiler or a sealed system
